The Silk Road - behind the facade

The Registan - Samarkand - Uzbekistan

The Silk Road, Uzbekistan and its place in world’s history is monumental.

It was my privilege to explore this vast country, from Khiva to Tashkent, and meet so many of its people.

‘Registan’ means desert in their language. Magnificent structures were created in the desert centuries ago and their surfaces covered magnificently with coloured tiles

I travelled, not with a group of photographers, but with a couple of interested companions and a local guide organised by a UK adventure travel company.

Workers in Khiva waiting for transport early in the morning. It was very cold!

I speak a little Russian, badly, which is widely spoken in Uzbekistan. It helped.

People were as interested in me, as much as I was with them
